Students for
Animals
We like to help shelters in
many countries to mediate students from The Netherlands.
This can be veterinary students from
the Universities of Utrecht at The Netherlands or from Gent at
Belgium.
Or students Animal Care from
secondary schools at The Netherlands.
Veterinary
students
The study for becoming an
official veterinary surgeon at the universities in The Netherlands and in Belgium is taking 6
years.
Many students in their 5th or
6th year have a lot of knowledge and skills, but like to get more practical experience with
surgeries, especially with neuterings.
Some of them are willing to go
for this reason for 1 or 2 weeks to other countries: good for them and good for the animals. A
really win-win situation!
What do they
offer?
- They pay their own
transportation, accommodation and other costs for living during their stay;
- They are willing to do all
kinds of medical treatments, but especially they are interested in doing neutering
operations;
- They are willing to share
their (topical) knowlodge with local vets;
- They are willing to work
hard: 8 or 9 hours a day is no problem.
What do they
need?
- The possibility of working at
an operation room with equipment and everything needed to do the operations;
- The supervision of an
official (english speaking) vet for monitoring the operations. At least in the
beginning.
- Enough animals for these
treatments. So from a big shelter, or via a 'Catch-Neuter-Return' -project.
Students Animal Care
In The Netherlands there are many secondary schools with
special studies for animal care. Lasting three or four
years, these programs give students a wide knowledge of animal care.
For getting additional practical and hands on experience, a teaching practice of four to eight
weeks is a mandatory part of their college of education.
We are looking for shelters
with possibilities for these students.
Do you have an
animal-shelter?
Maybe it is possible that students will come to your shelter and help you.
There are no costs involved for you, but there are a few important points to consider:
| Animal
Care students |
Vet
students |
1. The shelter must have
a minimum of
about 25 animals.
|
1. There must
be enough animals for the operations. |
2. It is necessary that
at least someone working at the shelter speaks English (or Dutch).
|
2. Idem for the official
vet. |
| 3. There must be a possibility for the students to
rent accommodation in the neighbourhood of your shelter. A studio or
apartment, maybe even a room at a private house could be a possibility, but always
with a bathroom and (a small) kitchen. |
3. Idem. |
| 4. Although the students Animal Care have a lot of
general knowledge of how to handle and care for
animals like dogs, cats and even horses, they have no specific knowledge
about medical
treatments and operations.
Sometimes we get requests from students who are studying for veterinary
assistant/nurse. However they are only allowed to do medical treatments with the
presence of an official veterinary. |
4. Vet students need (some) supervision
during the operations and other
treatments. |
5. The students like - and need - to learn as many
things as possible. Of course it is no problem for them to clean the kennels, but
they want to do so much more. They have a lot of knowledge and
like to practice this. Please give them responsibilities as it is better for
you, better for them and most important, better for the animals.
|
5. Vet students have a lot of
theoretical knowledge, but like to practice their skills with
their hands. And to do operations on their own. |

Do you want to offer possibilities to
students?
If you have read the information above and you still
believe your animal shelter is a good place for one or more students from The
Netherlands, please fill out this form:
After receiving the information from you, we will respond and may ask
for some additional information and a few good photos (inside and outsite) of your shelterand/or
clinic.
When we believe your shelter is a good place for the students, we
will put your information on this website.
To avoid miscommunications we prefer to stay between you and the
student at least for the first contacts. We will exchange names, email-addresses and phone-numbers,
so you and the students can communicate with eachother.
For students Animals Care: The school of the
individual student is the official contracting partner for you. You will most probably been
contacted by the mentor of the student and he or she will give you all the information about the
specific details for this teaching practice. Maybe he/she or a colleague will even visit your
shelter during the time the student is working at your place.
Is this commercial
business?
No, there are no costs involved for you or for the students.
We are animal-lovers and we know how difficult it is for most of the animals-shelters in countries
like Southern and Eastern Europe to get good good help for the animals.
Our goal is to be able to achieve a win-win situation as the shelters get the assistance they need
and the students gain needed skills and knowledge.
At the same time, while we try to make the best contacts possible
between the shelters and students, we cannot be involved or responsible for any complaints
about the individual students.
